DE Hoof Taps
D.E. Hoof Taps (or Hooftaps) are anti-bacterial zinc coated inserts invented by farrier Doug Ehrmann to help hoof defects to grow out from within.
They are inserted into the hoof wall just outside of the white line at the quarters, toe and or just in front of the seat of corn and lightly hammer tapped until flush with the wall's bearing surface. The hoof responds with tighter new wall growth and a healthier white line.
Each tap has an anti-bacterial coating and three shallow anchors and is 1.25 inches in length. The zinc is said to draw any bacteria in the hoof towards it, directing it away from moving up higher into the hoof wall.
DE Hoof Taps do not impede natural hoof flexion or expansion and can be considered an alternative to shoes on hind feet, help with hoof cracks, be used under shoes to help healthy hoof growth, and are also useful in helping some horses transition to barefoot.
