Momentous Ride with Cavallo

 A group of 47 riders set out from Mexico for Canada on April 20, 2009. Thirty-six of them achieved that goal on Saturday, September 5, 2009.

 It was a truly emotional time as this group assembled in the tall prairie grass between the United States and Canadian border at the end of this momentous journey. Riders from 42 states and 8 countries were a part of the journey, representing France, Australia, Sweden, Ireland, Mexico, Austria, Germany and Canada.

"I was totally impressed with the durability shown by our older riders. Some of them I pegged as dreamers at the start. Now they are the heroes," said Del Shields, a country and western singer/songwriter and experienced horseman.

 With local dignitaries, three dozen assorted Canadians, and a red serge clad Mountie ready to welcome them, the riders paused for five minutes to share two prayers led by Shields and then Chief Kills Pretty Enemy, who addressed them in both English and in his native tongue. Shields sent up thanks; first for the horses that had carried them to their destination over the past five months, and then issued a prayer for the celebration of life.

"We had one horse suffer a snake bite. He recovered, but he just couldn't be ridden again," said Shields. "We saw three mountain lions along the way, two in North Dakota and one in South Dakota. Care of the horses was absolute and safety of the riders was foremost."

Cavallo Hoof boots were relied on to protect horses' feet and keep them comfortable throughout this 2,200 mile ride. “After five continuous months of riding, I can tell you what really works in any condition” said Tom Seay, the leader of the trek and host of the American television show The Best of America by Horseback. “Several people tried other boots on the ride but they would all come back to the Cavallo Simple Boot.  It holds up as promised.  I saw no rub problems and it is truly easy to put on and take off.
